About this course
The Intermediate Chess program is designed for students who are comfortable with the rules of the game and basic tactics, and are ready to deepen their understanding of strategy and calculation. The course focuses on developing stronger positional judgment, recognizing tactical opportunities, and building the habits needed to analyze positions carefully and play consistently strong games.
Format
Each week will consist of an in-person 1 hour session. Classes will begin with short lessons on important strategic and tactical ideas, followed by puzzles, guided analysis of instructive positions, and practice games. Students will regularly review their own games and discuss alternative plans and improvements.
Topics will include tactical calculation, piece activity and coordination, pawn structure, planning in the middlegame, and essential endgame techniques. Selected master games will occasionally be examined to illustrate key ideas and themes.
Students are expected to know the basic rules of chess and simple checkmating patterns. Chess boards and pieces will be provided during class, though students are encouraged to practice between sessions if they have access to a board at home or online.
Participation in the Eastbridge Academy Discord server is encouraged, but not required.
