About this course

The Grade 9 and 10 math program is designed to go beyond the high school curriculum and give students a strong foundation in preparation for the more sophisticated topics coming in Grades 11 and 12.

Format

Each week will consist of an in-person 2 hour problem-solving session, during which students will present their solutions to a weekly problem set. The problem sets are designed to be accessible to students with a strong foundation in the Ontario curriculum, but will challenge them to think creatively and deeply.

Lectures on special additional topics outside the curriculum will be given on several occasions, and these topics will be covered in the more challenging problem sets.

No special supplies are required for the course, outside of pencil and paper. Even a calculator (though permitted) will not be of much use.

Participation in the Eastbridge Academy Discord server is encouraged, but not required.

Topics covered

Geometry

Geometry

We believe classical synthetic geometry is a powerful tool for problem-solving, and a beautiful subject in its own right that deserves the prominence it previously enjoyed over the last 2000 years. We will cover many of the classical theorems and techniques, from Euclid to Desargue.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

The Ontario curriculum typically defines the trigonometry functions as arbitrary ratios of sides of a right triangle. We will place the subject on a more intuitive foundation and expand its applications far beyond simple geometric problems involving right triangles.

Algebra

Algebra

The grade 9 and 10 curriculum equips students to solve simple linear systems and quadratic equations. We will expand on that base and place it in its proper historical context, giving students a taste for the rich vein of discoveries that the search for solutions to polynomial equations has led to.

Contests

In the leadup to the contests below, we will narrow our focus to topics and strategies that are most relevant to each. After each contest, we will do a retrospective and take every problem up in detail.

If any students are interested in participating but are not already registered through their school, we can make arrangements to enroll them.
