About this course
The Grade 7 and 8 program introduces students to contest mathematics through a full year of weekly classes, structured around the contests themselves: the Canada Jay in the fall, the AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo in the winter, and the Gauss in the spring, with the five-contest MOEMS league running throughout.
Class problems and problem sets are drawn from our curated archive of high-quality contest problems from Canada and around the world. Alongside the topics below, students develop the skills that decide these contests: careful arithmetic, setting up equations, systematic counting, and clear logical reasoning.
Format
Each week consists of an in-person session. Class opens with a six-problem sprint, develops one new topic through worked examples, and closes with a workshop where the week's hardest problems are taken up together. Students take home a problem set of about ten problems: six on the week's topic, two spiraling back to earlier material, and two harder problems for students who want more.
In league months, one class opens with the live 30-minute MOEMS sitting in place of the warm-up, so the league requires no extra evenings. We are closed in December; the second league contest is written in early January.
No special supplies are required for the course, outside of pencil and paper. Even a calculator (though permitted) will not be of much use.
Participation in the Eastbridge Academy Discord server is encouraged, but not required.
Topics covered
Number Theory
Fractions, ratios, and percentages, then primes, factorization, divisibility, remainders, and digits. Together these make up the largest share of questions on every paper at this level, and they anchor the fall term.
Counting & Probability
Systematic listing, casework, arrangements, and paths, building up to probability. Counting techniques are among the most frequently tested skills on every contest we prepare for.
Geometry
Angle chasing, areas by decomposition, the Pythagorean theorem, and the spatial reasoning the Kangaroo is known for: solids, nets, folding, and tiling.
Algebra & Rates
Translating word problems into equations, working with small systems, and the classic rate problems: speed, distance, time, and work. Algebra appears in the problem sets from October and is treated in full in the spring.
The contest year
The calendar below is the spine of the course. Several of these contests are hard to come by locally, so we register the cohort ourselves and run the sittings in class or at Eastbridge. Writing them takes no extra organizing from families.
In the lead-up to each contest we narrow our focus to its topics and tactics; afterward, we take every problem up in detail. The MOEMS league runs underneath the whole year: five contests between November and March, each sat in class.
Each student writes the Gauss paper for their own grade.
Registration for every contest above is handled by us. If a student is interested in writing additional papers (CIMC, Pascal, Fryer), we can make arrangements.
