About this course
The Beginner Chess program is designed to introduce you to the fundamental ideas of chess while building the habits of careful thinking, planning, and problem solving that the game encourages. Students will learn the rules of the game, core tactical patterns, and basic strategic principles, developing the skills needed to play complete and thoughtful games.
Format
Each week will consist of an in-person 1 hour session. Classes will include short lessons on key concepts followed by guided practice games, puzzles, and analysis of positions together as a group. Students will regularly review their own games and discuss alternative ideas and improvements.
Topics will include piece movement and coordination, basic checkmating patterns, common tactical ideas (such as forks, pins, and discovered attacks), and simple opening and endgame principles.
No prior chess experience is required. Chess boards and pieces will be provided during class, though students are encouraged to practice between sessions if they have access to a board at home or online.
Participation in the Eastbridge Academy Discord server is encouraged, but not required.
