About this course
The Advanced Chess program is our flagship section, taught by FIDE Master Hans Jung: 1996 Ontario Closed Champion, former editor of Canada's national chess magazine, Canada's first municipal Chess Coordinator, and a fixture of Kitchener-Waterloo chess for five decades. The course picks up where the Intermediate section leaves off and treats chess as a discipline, built on careful calculation, positional judgment, and openings that are understood rather than memorized.
Format
Each week consists of an in-person 1 hour session led by FM Jung. Classes combine master-level instruction on strategic and tactical themes with hard training positions, analysis of students' own tournament games, and study of instructive master games. Students are expected to play and analyze between sessions.
Topics will include advanced calculation and candidate moves, attack and defence, pawn-structure planning, practical endgame technique, and building a personal opening repertoire.
Placement in the Advanced section is by our placement quiz or demonstrated playing strength (tournament rating, strong club play, or completion of our Intermediate course). Chess boards, pieces, and clocks are provided during class.
Participation in the Eastbridge Academy Discord server is encouraged, but not required.
